Challenging Winter Weekend Conquering the Highest Peak in North Africa
Looking for an exciting way to spend a winter weekend? Why not climb Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and all of North Africa! This trek is a real alpine adventure through the stunning snow-covered High Atlas, featuring icy trails, magnificent winter scenery, and the warm welcome of the Berber people.
The High Atlas Mountains of Morocco offer one of the most unforgettable spots on earth for winter trekking. During this season, you will need proper winter gear and good fitness, but no technical climbing skills. If you’re fit and determined, this summit can be yours!
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech – Transfer to Imlil (1,800 m)
We’ll pick you up in Marrakech and drive to the beautiful snow-dusted village of Imlil. Enjoy a welcome dinner and take in the winter views of the High Atlas. In the afternoon, we’ll do a short acclimatization walk around Imlil and visit a frozen waterfall. All transportation, meals, and accommodation included. Let the winter adventure begin!
Day 2: Hike to Refuge(3,207 m)
After breakfast, we’ll hike 3 hours to Sidi Chamharouch, with a break for tea and snacks. After lunch, we’ll continue through icy trails for 3 more hours to reach Refuge des Mouflons, our base for the summit. Overnight stay with hot dinner under the starry winter sky.
Day 3: Summit Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) and Return to Marrakech
We start early (~4 a.m.) for a slow, steady winter ascent with crampons and ice axe. After 3-4 hours, we’ll reach the summit in time for sunrise! From the top: breathtaking views of snow-capped Atlas peaks and the distant Sahara. We then descend to Imlil and drive back to Marrakech.
Refuge
The refuge is basic but offers hot showers, some Western-style toilets, and a cozy heated room to relax with other hikers. Dinner and breakfast are included. Note: Boots are not allowed inside. Bring sandals or slippers to keep feet warm and dry!
