Volunteering FAQs

Volunteering — FAQ
Volunteering is a rewarding way to support Hiking in London, spend time in amazing places and make new friends — and it's open to everyone. Here are the answers to the questions we're asked most. Tap any question to see more.
Who can volunteer?
Do I have to be a member?
No — many of our volunteers aren't members. We welcome everyone who loves the outdoors and wants to give back to the community.
How old do I need to be?
There's generally no age limit — as long as you can make a useful, safe contribution and the activity suits your age, you're welcome. Anyone under 18 needs permission from a parent or guardian and adult supervision; as we can't always provide this, younger volunteers may need to take part alongside their parent or guardian.
I'm receiving government benefits — can I volunteer?
Yes. We'd suggest letting your job centre know about your volunteering so everything is in order.
I live outside the UK — can I volunteer?
Yes, but it's your responsibility to make sure your visa or immigration status allows volunteer work in the UK. If you have any doubts, please check with UK Visas and Immigration.
I'm a refugee or asylum seeker — can I volunteer?
If you have refugee status or exceptional leave to remain, you're welcome to volunteer. Asylum seekers can also volunteer. If a final appeal is refused and leave to remain is denied, volunteering must stop.
How does volunteering work?
How much time should I give?
There's no minimum. Give as much time as you like, based on your availability. Some roles benefit from regular involvement (like one hike a week), but it's entirely flexible.
Will I be paid?
Volunteering is unpaid, but you won't be out of pocket — we cover agreed costs, such as travel between your home and where you volunteer.
Is training available?
Yes, depending on the role. A hike leader receives first-aid and group-management training; other roles are learned alongside experienced volunteers. Everyone gets a full induction so you feel confident.
How will I stay informed?
Through briefings, digital newsletters and social media groups. There's also an online platform where you can update your details, view calendars and catch the latest news.
Are volunteers recognised and rewarded?
Definitely! We host social events to say thank you — dinners, barbecues and special activities — recognise volunteer teams in our publications and social media, and run a service-award scheme.
Is accommodation provided?
Usually people volunteer close to home, so accommodation isn't provided. For special events or trips that need it, we can discuss options.
Will I be insured?
Yes — our insurance covers all volunteers during club activities, protecting you in case of personal injury or property damage.
Do you have a Volunteering Charter?
Yes. Our Volunteering Charter was created for and by volunteers and staff. It sets out what you can expect from us and what we ask of you, so everyone has a great experience.
What happens next?
I want to volunteer — what should I do now?
Fantastic! Find opportunities near you on our website, then complete the application form for the role that interests you. Someone from our team will be in touch about next steps, which may include a visit and an informal chat.
Can groups get involved?
Yes — from corporate teams to community and family groups. It's a great way to strengthen relationships and give back to the community together.
Ready to lend a hand?
Everyone's welcome — all ages, all backgrounds, all cultures. Explore volunteering roles or get in touch and we'll help you find your place.
