Trail Maps: Essential Apps for Hikers

Finding the perfect trail has never been easier. Whether you're walking the UK's rolling hills or trekking through the mountains abroad, these apps guide you every step of the way. Here are our favourites to download before your next adventure.

1
All levels · Worldwide

AllTrails

A hiker favourite, with detailed maps, reviews and photos for thousands of trails around the world — including plenty of family-friendly routes in the UK. Great for casual walkers and serious trekkers alike.

2
Planning · Offline maps

Komoot

Ideal for planning longer hikes, with detailed offline maps, voice navigation and terrain difficulty tips. Especially handy for mountain adventures and tricky multi-day treks.

3
UK · Most detailed

OS Maps

For exploring the UK, Ordnance Survey's OS Maps is a must-have. With incredibly detailed maps of the countryside, you'll always know exactly where you are — even on the most remote paths.

4
International · AR features

Outdooractive

Perfect for adventures abroad, with maps for destinations worldwide and augmented-reality features that name nearby peaks and landmarks. Great for hikes in places like the Alps or Nepal. (Formerly ViewRanger, now part of Outdooractive.)

5
Safety · Remote trails

Cairn

Essential for safety on remote trails. Share your route and estimated finish time with loved ones, and see where you'll have phone signal. A smart choice for any adventurous hiker.

However good the app, nothing beats walking with people who know the way. Our leaders handle the navigation, so you can simply enjoy the day.
