Tenerife South: Beaches, Tapas and Culture with a Spanish Touch
When people think of Tenerife, the south is often what comes to mind — golden beaches, lively nightlife, and endless sunshine. But there’s so much more here than just lying by the pool. For us Spartans, the south of Tenerife is where relaxation meets culture, and where our guides, María and Thomas, bring their Spanish roots to make the experience unforgettable.
Beaches everyone talks about
You can’t come to southern Tenerife without dipping your feet in Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, or Los Cristianos. Each has its own vibe: Costa Adeje is stylish and chilled, Las Américas is buzzing with energy and nightlife, and Los Cristianos mixes family-friendly beaches with a working port that keeps its authentic charm.
Tapas you need to try
Forget rushing to touristy spots; follow María and Thomas to local guachinches (traditional Canary taverns) where the food is homemade and full of flavor. Must-tries?
- Papas arrugadas with mojo – salty wrinkled potatoes with red or green sauce
- Gofio escaldado – toasted cornmeal paste, a local staple
- Grilled octopus fresh from the Atlantic
- And of course, a cold local beer or sweet Canarian wine to wash it down
Culture and history beyond the beach
The south isn’t just sun loungers and sangría. A short drive inland brings you to villages with whitewashed churches, old banana plantations, and archaeological sites of the Guanches, Tenerife’s indigenous people. Visit markets for local crafts, and don’t miss a stroll around Adeje’s historic center to feel the authentic island vibe.
Where the party happens
If you’re looking for nightlife, Playa de las Américas is the island’s party hub. Think beach clubs, live music, and bars where the vibe runs until sunrise. For something more low-key, Costa Adeje has cozy seafront bars perfect for sunset drinks after a day of exploring.
Tips from María and Thomas
- Ask them anything: being from Spain, they’re not just guides — they’ll help you with language, local customs, and even where to find the best churros after a night out.
- Plan your beach days: mornings are perfect for calm swims, afternoons get lively with music and water sports.
- Go beyond the resorts: a short bus or taxi ride inland shows you a more authentic side of Tenerife — rugged hills, tiny hamlets, and real Canarian life.
And like every Spartan trip, even after chilling on the beach we finish the same way — cold beers, a toast together, and our famous “miauuuu” echoing by the ocean. Because every adventure, big or small, deserves to be celebrated.
