Privacy and Cookie Policy
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. Some are needed for the site to work at all. Others help us understand how people use it. This page explains exactly which ones we use, what they do and how you can control them.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small file placed on your computer, tablet or phone when you visit a website. It lets the site remember things between pages and between visits, such as what is in your basket or whether you are signed in.
We also use similar technologies such as local storage, which works the same way but stores the information in your browser instead. Where we say "cookies" on this page, we mean both.
2. How to control them
When you first visit our site you are asked whether you accept analytics cookies. Essential cookies do not need your permission, because the site cannot work without them.
You can change your choice at any time by clearing the cookies for this site in your browser and reloading the page, which will bring the banner back.
You can also block or delete cookies directly in your browser settings. Be aware that blocking essential cookies will stop the basket and checkout from working, so you will not be able to book a walk.
3. Essential cookies
These are required for the website, your account and the checkout to function. They do not track you and they cannot be switched off.
| Cookie | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
PHPSESSID | Keeps your session alive as you move between pages | Until you close the browser |
form_key | Security token that protects our forms against fraudulent submissions | Session |
mage-cache-sessid | Tells the site when to refresh your locally stored data | Session |
mage-cache-storage | Stores your basket and account data locally so pages load faster | Session |
private_content_version | Makes sure you see your own basket rather than a cached copy | 1 year |
section_data_ids | Keeps your basket and account panels up to date | Session |
X-Magento-Vary | Serves the correct cached version of a page | Session |
mage-messages | Shows confirmation and error messages after an action | Until read |
user_allowed_save_cookie | Records your cookie choice so we do not ask again | 1 year |
guest-view | Lets you check an order without an account | Session |
4. Payment and security cookies
Set by our payment providers when you reach the checkout, to process the payment and detect fraud. Without them, payment cannot be completed.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
__stripe_mid | Stripe | Fraud prevention | 1 year |
__stripe_sid | Stripe | Fraud prevention during the payment | 30 minutes |
_GRECAPTCHA | Tells humans from bots on our forms | 6 months |
PayPal and Klarna also set their own cookies once you are redirected to them to pay. Those are governed by their own cookie policies.
5. Analytics cookies
These are only set if you agree. They tell us which walks people look at and where the website is failing them, so we can improve it. We do not use them to identify you personally.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another | 2 years |
_ga_* | Google Analytics | Keeps track of the current visit | 2 years |
_gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors over 24 hours | 24 hours |
6. Cookies from embedded content
Some pages include videos and maps hosted elsewhere. When you play a video or load a map, that provider may set its own cookies, which we do not control.
- YouTube on our video gallery and some event pages.
- Google Maps where we show a meeting point or a route.
Our links to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp are ordinary links. They set no cookies until you click them and leave our site.
7. Managing cookies in your browser
Every browser lets you see, block and delete cookies. The settings are usually under Privacy or Security:
- Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies.
- Safari: Settings, then Privacy.
- Firefox: Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
A word of warning
If you block all cookies, you will not be able to sign in, add a walk to your basket or pay. That is not a design choice on our part: the checkout genuinely needs them to work.
8. Changes to this policy
We review this page whenever we add or remove a tool from the website. The date at the top shows the current version.
