What to Pack & Prepare: Mont Blanc 2025 Expedition Gear Guide

Essential Equipment Checklist

  • Mountaineering boots (crampon compatible – no trekking boots)
  • Crampons (properly adjusted to your boots)
  • Ice axe
  • Helmet (mountaineering)
  • Climbing harness
  • 30–40L mountaineering backpack
  • Headlamp (with extra batteries)
  • Warm hat/beanie + Buff/neck gaiter
  • Gloves: thin gloves + warm waterproof gloves/mittens
  • Sunglasses (Category 3 or 4, glacier suitable)
  • Goggles (for extreme weather, optional but useful)
  • Base layers (thermal top & bottom)
  • Insulation mid-layers (fleece, lightweight down/synthetic jacket)
  • Waterproof jacket & trousers (Gore-Tex or similar)
  • Softshell or windproof trousers
  • Mountaineering pants (not jeans or shorts)
  • Warm jacket (down or synthetic, for evenings/huts)
  • 2–3 pairs of socks (mountaineering/thermal)
  • Water bottle(s)/hydration system (minimum 1.5–2L)
  • Snacks/energy bars for summit day
  • Personal toiletries & small first-aid kit
  • Sleeping liner (for mountain huts – blanket provided)
  • Cash/credit card (for hut extras, cable car tickets, etc.)
  • Passport & travel documents

Note: All technical climbing equipment can be rented in Chamonix. The club will provide ropes for group use.

Clothing & Footwear Tips

  • Dress in layers to regulate body temperature.
  • Avoid cotton: use synthetic or merino wool layers.
  • Mountaineering boots must be rigid, insulated, and crampon-compatible (category B2 or B3).
  • Bring two pairs of gloves: one lightweight, one warm/waterproof for summit push.
  • Pack waterproof over-trousers for glacier and summit sections.

Weather & Climate

Refuge de Tête Rousse (3,167 m) & Refuge du Goûter (3,835 m)

  • Day: 0°C to +8°C (32–46°F)
  • Night/Morning: –8°C to +2°C (17–36°F)
  • High wind chill, possible snow or ice, rapid changes.
  • Strong UV on snow. Always use sun protection.

Chamonix (1,035 m)

  • Day: 6°C to 18°C (43–64°F)
  • Night: 0°C to 10°C (32–50°F)

Top Tips for Mont Blanc Success

  • Prepare with long hikes, hill walking, and some gym/cardio work.
  • Acclimatize: Follow the itinerary for gradual altitude adaptation.
  • Eat & hydrate: Carry snacks and drink water often.
  • Pack smart: Keep essentials accessible (gloves, sunglasses, headlamp, snacks).
  • Weather changes fast: Always have your waterproof/windproof layers ready.
  • Stay positive: The mental challenge is as big as the physical. Support your teammates!
  • Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance covers mountaineering up to 5,000m.
