Join our coastal walk from Birchington to Herne Bay along scenic seaside paths. This relaxed journey takes you through picturesque North Kent, featuring pebble beaches, wildflower meadows, and dramatic cliff-top views. Regular trains from London to Birchington with reliable connections and free parking available if driving.

Route Highlights:

Enjoy a scenic coastal walk along North Kent’s picturesque shoreline, passing the dramatic ruins of Reculver—a 12th-century church within a Roman fort. Stroll along unspoilt shingle beaches adorned with wildflowers in summer, and take in breathtaking cliff-top views. Opportunities for sea swimming and wildlife sightings during low tides complete this memorable route.

  • Surfaces: Mostly paved/firm paths; some shingle or firm wet sand (tide-dependent)
  • Landmarks: Westgate-on-Sea, Birchington, Reculver Towers, Herne Bay Pier
  • Notes: Low tide lets us walk on firm sand and avoid shingle; at high tide expect more shingle.

ROUTE PLAN — QUICK TAKE

We’re heading out for a full day in the countryside: fresh air, good vibes, and plenty of photo moments. We’ll keep a steady pace, with a picnic stop halfway, so bring something you’ll enjoy eating outdoors.

SAFETY

Leaders are first-aid trained and carry a first aid kit. We are a non-profit organisation registered with the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) — see details here: BMC registration.

USEFUL INFO

  • Group train tickets: we travel together there and back from the same station.
  • Going solo: if you plan to return separately or get off elsewhere, please buy your individual ticket in advance.
  • Our routes are inspired by and sometimes adapted from Saturday Walkers Club.

  • Members: FREE (with active membership — join here)
  • Non-members: £12

WHAT TO BRING

  • Comfortable clothing and walking footwear (hiking boots if you have them).
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers recommended; waterproof shoes if possible.
  • Water (at least 1 litre, ideally 2).
  • Lunch for the picnic stop.
  • Some money for the pub afterwards (optional).
