A beautiful walk through the Chiltern Hills, starting in Great Missenden and passing through peaceful countryside, beech woodland and picturesque villages before reaching historic Old Amersham.

The route

Starting at Great Missenden Station, we head into the Chiltern countryside towards Little Missenden, through open countryside, traditional villages and beautiful woodland.

The route continues towards Penn Street and Old Amersham, one of Buckinghamshire's most attractive historic towns. After exploring the old town, a final climb takes us to Amersham Station for the train back to London.

Difficulty

Moderate · 5/10. The route is gently undulating with several climbs but no major mountain-style ascents. Expect countryside paths, fields and woodland. Sections can become muddy after prolonged rain, so hiking boots with good grip are recommended.

A full day in the countryside: fresh air, good company and plenty of photo stops. We keep a steady, sociable pace with a picnic break halfway, so bring something you'll enjoy eating outdoors. Most people join on their own — you'll be very welcome.

What to bring

  • Comfortable clothing and walking footwear — hiking boots if you have them.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers recommended; waterproof shoes if possible.
  • Water — at least 1 litre, ideally 2.
  • A packed lunch for the picnic stop.
  • Some money for the pub afterwards (optional, but recommended!).

Train tickets: we buy a group ticket and travel together there and back from the same station. If you plan to return separately or get off elsewhere, please buy your own ticket in advance.

Safety on our walks
Our leaders are first-aid trained and carry a first aid kit. We are a non-profit organisation registered with the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) — see our BMC registration.
Bringing your dog
Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Read more in our Dog Policy.
