A beautiful autumn walk through the Essex countryside, starting in Great Chesterford and passing through historic Saffron Walden and Audley End before finishing in Newport, Essex.

The route

Starting at Great Chesterford Railway Station, we walk through the rolling Essex countryside towards Saffron Walden, with its historic streets, medieval buildings and castle remains.

The route continues through Audley End Park and open countryside before reaching Newport Railway Station for the train back to London.

Meeting Location: Main concourse, by the departure boards

Meeting Time: 8:00 AM

Departure: Train at 8:24 AM

Starting Point: Great Chesterford Railway Station at approximately 9:31 AM

Finishing Point: Newport (Essex) Railway Station

Expected Finish: approximately 4:25 PM

Return Train: approximately 4:42 PM from Newport

Back in London: approximately 5:42 PM at Liverpool Street

Walking time is calculated at an average pace of 3 km/h, plus approximately one additional hour for breaks and stops. Train times should be checked again shortly before the event in case of timetable changes or engineering works.

A full day in the countryside: fresh air, good company and plenty of photo stops. We keep a steady, sociable pace with a picnic break halfway, so bring something you'll enjoy eating outdoors. Most people join on their own — you'll be very welcome.

What to bring

  • Comfortable clothing and walking footwear — hiking boots if you have them.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers recommended; waterproof shoes if possible.
  • Water — at least 1 litre, ideally 2.
  • A packed lunch for the picnic stop.
  • Some money for the pub afterwards (optional, but recommended!).

Train tickets: we buy a group ticket and travel together there and back from the same station. If you plan to return separately or get off elsewhere, please buy your own ticket in advance.

Safety on our walks
Our leaders are first-aid trained and carry a first aid kit. We are a non-profit organisation registered with the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) — see our BMC registration.
Bringing your dog
Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Read more in our Dog Policy.
