Hiking in Cyprus: Legendary Trails on Mount Olympus

Spartans in the Island of the Gods

Cyprus is not just about beaches and sunshine. Deep in the heart of the island, the Troodos Mountains hide a legendary place: Mount Olympus, also known as Chionistra. It’s the highest peak in Cyprus at 1,952 meters and offers something truly unique—nature, legends, and breathtaking trails.

Why Hike Here?

Because this is the other side of Cyprus: peaceful, wild, and full of ancient stories. Walking through pine forests with wide-open views and clean mountain air feels like stepping into another world. Some say this is where the Greek gods watched over the earth… and it’s easy to believe it when you’re up there.

The Main Route: Atalanti Trail

The Atalanti Trail is the signature hike around Mount Olympus. It’s a 14 km circular route that takes about 4–5 hours. It’s well-marked and shaded, with stunning lookouts over the island and small historical ruins hidden in the woods.

It’s not too hard, not too easy. Just right for a full Spartan day outdoors—with a cold drink at the end, of course.

Other Beautiful Trails

  • Artemis Trail: a shorter 7 km loop near the summit, peaceful and scenic.
  • Kalidonia Waterfalls: a shaded route with flowing water, ideal in summer.
  • Millomeris Trail: relaxed, quiet, and great for photography.

History and Local Legends

  • Yes, Cyprus has snow and skiing in winter—right here on Mount Olympus.
  • “Chionistra” means “snowy one” in Greek.
  • The mountain villages are full of old rebel tales, monks, and hidden treasures.
  • Cypriot wine is ancient and amazing—don’t leave without trying a glass of Commandaria.

Where to Stay: Spartan Base Camp

For a 4-day hiking adventure, we recommend staying in Platres. It’s charming, friendly, and close to all the main trails. Plus, it has great places to eat and relax after your hike.

Other great options:

  • Pedoulas: peaceful and full of mountain views.
  • Kakopetria: picturesque, lively, and with excellent local food.

How to Get There from London

There are direct flights from London to Larnaca or Paphos (around 4.5 hours). From there, rent a car and you’ll be in the mountains within 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can also use buses, but having a car gives you more flexibility for the hikes.

Suggested 4-Day Plan

  • Day 1: Arrival, check-in, and sunset stroll in Platres. Team dinner.
  • Day 2: Hike the full Atalanti Trail. After the hike? Cold beer and a Spartan miauuu.
  • Day 3: Artemis in the morning, Kalidonia waterfalls in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: Local visit to monasteries or wineries. Return to London.

Tips for Spartans

  • Bring layers. Weather changes quickly in the mountains.
  • Hiking boots are essential—don’t go with trainers.
  • Use sunscreen and a hat. Even at high altitudes, the sun is strong.
  • Pack plenty of water and trail snacks like fruit, nuts or a halloumi wrap.
  • Download the GPX maps in case signal is weak on the trail.

And of course… taverna time and miauuu

After the hikes, we do what Spartans do best: we find a local taverna, sit together, and celebrate the day. If someone wants a cold drink, we just raise our hand and say miauuu. It works every time.
