Cares Gorge Trail – The Ultimate Espartano Adventure in Picos de Europa
Ready for one of the most jaw-dropping hikes in Spain? The Cares Gorge Trail (“Ruta del Cares”) is the king of Spanish hiking routes and the pride of Picos de Europa. This is not just a walk—it's an adventure straight out of a legend! As always, the Hiking in London Club is calling all our Espartanos for a journey you’ll never forget, led by our fearless guides María (your expert in local stories and good vibes) and Thomas (ready to capture your best hiking moments on camera!).
Quick Facts
- Location: Picos de Europa National Park (Asturias & León, Spain)
- Distance: 12 km (one way), 24 km return
- Difficulty: Moderate (mainly flat but long, with some vertigo-inducing drops!)
- Time: 3-4 hours one way, 6-7 hours round trip
- Best Time: Late spring to early autumn
What’s So Special? Curiosities & Mysteries
- A Path Carved in Stone: The Cares trail was dug by hand between 1916 and 1921 to maintain a canal supplying hydroelectric power. Imagine hundreds of workers hanging off cliffs with ropes—crazy!
- “The Divine Gorge”: Locals call it “La Garganta Divina” because of its dramatic views. Expect turquoise waters, wild goats (the iconic rebeco), and tunnels that make you feel like Indiana Jones.
- Legends & Ghost Stories: Old tales say the gorge is haunted by spirits of past mountaineers and workers. On misty days, you might hear whispers echoing between the rocks…
- UNESCO Biosphere: The trail passes through landscapes recognized as a Biosphere Reserve. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and vultures overhead!
Route Description – Step by Step
- Start: Caín (León) or Poncebos (Asturias)
Both villages are stunning—Caín is slightly easier for parking, but Poncebos has that real “end-of-the-world” vibe. Most people start in Caín and do a round trip, or arrange a pick-up in the other village. - The Trail
You’ll walk along narrow ledges blasted into the rock, through hand-carved tunnels, and across picturesque bridges. The canal (always on your side) runs with crystal-clear water. There are some drops, but the path is wide enough for safe walking (just don’t mess around on the edge, Espartanos!). Every corner brings a new epic photo spot—don’t rush! - End: Poncebos (Asturias) or Caín (León)
Time for a group selfie, then either walk back or catch your transfer. Both villages have little bars for a celebratory drink.
Local Food – Treats You Can’t Miss
- Queso de Cabrales: The world-famous blue cheese of Asturias—strong, creamy, and absolutely unmissable with fresh bread.
- Fabada Asturiana: Hearty bean stew perfect after a long hike.
- Cider (“Sidra”): Try pouring it like a local—from high up for bubbles!
- Embutidos: Local sausages and cured meats—ideal for a hiker’s lunch.
What to See & Do
- The Gorge Itself: Sheer cliffs, roaring river, hidden waterfalls.
- Cueva de la Hermida: A tiny hermit’s cave halfway along.
- Goat-Spotting: The wild mountain goats are true daredevils—try to spot them climbing impossible ledges!
- Local Villages: Take time to wander Caín and Poncebos; tiny stone houses and mountain charm everywhere.
Tips for Espartanos
- Gear: Good hiking boots, layers, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring a headlamp if you love exploring the tunnels!
- Water & Snacks: There’s no water refill on the trail, so come prepared. Pack a picnic and some chocolate.
- Safety: No barriers on some parts—watch your step and stick together.
- Photos: Thomas will be snapping pro shots, but the views are so good you’ll fill your phone’s memory anyway.
- Start Early: Avoid the crowds and enjoy the morning light.
Espartano Secrets
- Magic Moments: Early morning, when mist hugs the cliffs, is pure magic. Stay quiet for a few minutes and let the landscape do its thing.
- Local Legend: Ask María for the story of the “Bandit of Cares”—a Robin Hood-style figure said to haunt the mountains (she’s got the best version!).
