Broadstairs Coastal Walk: History, Mysteries and Our Spartan Tradition
If there’s a coastal route that truly wins the hearts of the Spartans from Hiking in London Club, it’s definitely Broadstairs. Golden sandy beaches, dramatic chalk cliffs, smuggling legends, and an epic pub at the finish line — this is the perfect seaside escape for a day hike from London!
A bit of history
Known as the “jewel of the Kent coast,” Broadstairs was a favourite retreat of famous writer Charles Dickens. Here he penned parts of David Copperfield while enjoying the sea views. During World War II, tunnels dug under the cliffs were used as air-raid shelters — and many say they still hide secrets of the past, adding a mysterious vibe to this walk.
Curiosities and mysteries
- Bleak House: The iconic house overlooking the sea where Dickens lived and wrote.
- Local tales suggest the tunnels were once used by 18th-century smugglers.
- Botany Bay: Famous for its chalk stacks and notorious as a smuggling hotspot centuries ago.
Route details
- Distance: 10–12 km (depending on variations).
- Difficulty: Easy — coastal path with gentle ups and downs.
- Estimated time: 3–4 hours with breaks and photo stops.
- Start point: Broadstairs Railway Station.
- Finish: Historic pub by the harbour.
The walk follows part of the Viking Coastal Trail, skirting beaches like Viking Bay, Stone Bay and Botany Bay, offering breathtaking views of the English Channel. Perfect for a day out filled with sea breeze and nature.

The famous pub and our “Miauuuu” ritual
At the end of the hike, we head to a historic pub by the harbour (our favourite is The Charles Dickens Pub). Here we celebrate our arrival with the legendary “Miauuuu!” — the Spartan call — and order our well-deserved victory pint to toast the adventure completed.
Tips for Spartans
- Footwear: Easy trail, but expect some sand and mud — comfy trekking shoes recommended.
- Photography: Bring a camera or fully charged phone; the cliffs and bays are stunning.
- Weather: Coastal wind can be strong; pack a windbreaker even on sunny days.
- Transport: Direct trains from London St Pancras (about 1h 30min).
- Extra treat: Don’t miss Morelli’s artisan ice cream if you have time afterwards.
Conclusion
Broadstairs is more than just a hike — it’s history, sea views and pure Spartan spirit. A coastal route that blends Dickensian charm with our love for adventure: walking together, enjoying the journey and ending with our signature “Miauuuu” and a cold pint by the sea.
